1. What aspect of the internship experience added to your personal development?
I think it greatly added to my personal development by being able to work with GCSC again, and in a different capacity to learn more and grow in my own. I could see, more on the outside, how things have changed and learn more on working sporting events. Also, on how to extend a hospitality aspect to it, which was exciting and allowed me to excel more at my current job. 2. What experiences on the job have related to your academic studies? I think there is a lot that could be said about things being related to academic studies. The first thing I think of is the current class I’m in, regarding legal and ethical issues. The reason I thought of that was because there were a few instances where legal/ethical things came into play. For example, a man passed away during USA Triathlon, which was horrible and so sad. They had to figure out how best to handle this to alert everyone, give the family privacy, and just make sure it’s done the most appropriately as possible. 3. What was the quality of supervision and communication with your supervisor? The supervision was great and I loved working with Mike Mulhall. He was always there for me, and worked to do what he could. Even when he was on vacation, or busy with other things, he would try to be as timely of manner as possible. Also, working with Dr. Tiell was amazing and allowed me to have a great other aspect of my mentorship. We had weekly calls as much as possible and emailed on top of that. I had a very positive experience on both sides. 4. How has the internship influenced your career objectives? This has helped me to gain more knowledge to not only better do my current job, but help in the future to expand my knowledge to work more closely on all type of large events – from conventions to sporting events. 5. If other students were considering this job, what advice would you pass on to them about this position? I would definitely encourage them to do a similar or same internship/mentorship as this one, as it was beneficial to me and can for others too. I would recommend to take full advantage of being part of the pre-planning and organizing and onsite at the events as much as possible. This way you are seeing all of the aspects, as well as the post planning too. I would advise to set up meetings with the mentor in advance to ensure you can talk when needed, as well as plan things early. I waited until too long for a few things, that could have been done earlier if I mentioned right away. But, overall, it is very positive and highly recommend.

Another recap day for earlier this week, I checked in with the other organizations and people I worked with to send a thank you for helping us and being part of this great welcome for the Olympians. This included, but was not limited too:
Today I checked in with Dr. Tiell to see how everything was going and how Tuesday wrapped up - but haven't heard yet. Though I know she is very busy so totally understand. Just can't wait to hear.
I was able to chat with Courtney at the Indians today to check in, see how everything went, and ensure payment was all secure. She said the group was a joy and they loved hosting them, and hoped that the group felt the same. And she contacted the payment office for me to get a receipt sent over so I can get that to Dr. Tiell. I got that by the end of the day and sent it over. Will be setting up a meeting with Mike for next week just to regroup, hear about the event more from his perspective, and make sure that we have everything completed that is needed.
Though I was not able to be onsite for the day - I was on call in case anything was needed!
They had the tour at Fox Sports (all good!!) and then the Rock Hall visit all afternoon. Dr. Tiell reached out to me to resend the Rock Hall tickets - as I got 4 free tickets for the group - so I resent those so Dr. Tiell could use them straight on her phone. Additionally, there was another Olympian to be picked up, so I relayed everything to Melissa and set up that Sue (gold coat) would meet the Olympian at the gate and guide to their car. I sent a picture too. I was updated that Amadou, the Olympian, passed the gold coat without seeing - however, they did meet up with him and his driver in baggage claim to get to the right baggage claim area and then their car. So they were able to help! I have placed the Itinerary here once more and also the Cleveland Reception information for tonight! Quick work today following up more with Melissa and Dr. Tiell - working as the middleman just to ensure everything is in place for the gold coat to meet the guests. They have the pictures, the gate and time, and all information needed to spot them on Sunday, greet them, guide them to baggage claim, and then get them to their pick-up.
Also, here is a helpful baggage claim map to see how things are placed throughout. I also have created a more detailed one that is complete with labeling the carousels by number and which airlines you them. I confirmed one more time with my contacts for the events and tours I set up for Monday and Tuesday - just to make sure everything was in place. Additionally, I had mentioned to Dr. Tiell that I could help connect with my contact at the airport to have their staff meet the Olympians at their gate to ensure they get to their car efficiently. And also so they have a great welcome and first experience in Cleveland.
Dr. Tiell sent me a couple people they were looking to have people connect with - so I sent my contact with all of the details to see if we could make this happen. After talking with Melissa - my contact and the person in charge of the airport volunteers (gold coats) - it appears one of them we cannot assist with because it's after midnight and volunteers are only there until 9:30pm. However, they can assist with the 2nd person on Sunday and Melissa is ready to hear from me for more people too. I sent pictures of the people to for reference for the gold coats. This can be found below: I heard back from Courtney at Progressive Field and here are the details below: Yes, 10 am on Tuesday. We can have them arrive at the Executive Front Offices. If you put in the ballpark address, 2401 Ontario St., Cleveland, OH 44115, it is fine to park in the taxi lane and you will see a revolving door that you can walk into. There will be a member of our security team sitting at the front desk, they can go through security there. What will the total number of individuals be? We would like to put together some goodie bags for them to have following the tour. If you could also send some shirt sizing, we only have medium and XL, we would love to add shirts into those goodie bags for them. Please get back to me at your earliest convenience. We are very much looking forward to the tour! It is so great that they are going to give some goodie bags for the Olympians, a great plus and gift for them! Here is the list I got from Dr. Tiell regarding names and sizes -
Reached out to Dr. Tiell to check on things today, and she let me know that she was still waiting on details from Mike on the GCSC guest list - so I sent over to Mike to check on that. Also, originally she was looking for someone to pick up an Olympian on Sunday, but by the end of the night someone had picked it up!
Also, everything is still set with Alex at Fox Sports and Courtney with Progressive Field. With Progressive, the guests will meet at 10am and I sent out to ask where they should meet for the tour - waiting to hear on that. I am also triple checking on the itinerary to make sure that Dr. Tiell has all of the details on my end for who, what, where, when, etc. A quick update for today, but I heard from Courtney at Progressive Field and I was able to secure the tour for Tuesday at 10am. Yay! So glad the Olympians will be able to see Progressive Field before they head out to Tiffin.
Additionally, today I really focused on going over everything, and making sure there isn't anything I am missing. Reached out to Dr. Tiell about Progressive Field, and going to tyr to plan a chat Tuesday/Wednesday of this week to make sure we are all set! |
